Words, characters, and reading time

FAQ

How is a word counted?

Any run of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks counts as one word — the same way most editors count.

How is reading time estimated?

Using an average silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute.

Are sentence and paragraph counts exact?

They're close estimates: sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (. ! ?) and paragraphs by blank lines, which covers most prose but can miss unusual formatting.
