Estimate body-fat percentage from tape measurements (US Navy method)

US Navy body-fat method

Estimates body-fat percentage from a few tape measurements using the US Navy circumference formula. Men need height, neck, and waist; women also need hip. It's a quick estimate — not as precise as a DEXA scan, but useful for tracking trends. Calculated locally in your browser.

FAQ

Where do I measure?

Neck below the larynx, waist at the navel, hip at the widest point. Keep the tape snug and level, and measure relaxed (don't suck in).

How accurate is it?

Within a few percent for most people, but it's a statistical estimate. Use the same technique each time so changes over weeks are meaningful.

Why does it need my height?

The Navy formula uses the ratio of your circumferences to your height, so height is part of the equation for both sexes.
